tags not closed - error in xml sitemap

I have a site with about 40000 content items. I have them included in the xml version of my sitemap. The xml sitemap does display, but after a handful of listings, it stops and ends with an error displaying:

The XML page cannot be displayed

Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.

The following tags were not closed: urlset. Error processing resource 'http://www.xxxxxxxxxx.com/sitemap/xml'.
