Sitemap XML generation hangs

The html generation works fine with:
www.mysite.nl/index.php/en/?option=com_xmap&view=html&id=1

but the xml form hangs and freezes the browser:
www.mysite.nl/index.php/en/?option=com_xmap&view=xml&id=1

note that I use joomla 1.6 with multiple languages and the html works fine in all 10 languages each time showing the language dependant menu items correctly.
