Solution for multilingual sites

Postby localicer » Wed Sep 19, 2007 3:02 am

I have a multilingual site using the Joom!Fish extension. The automatic language detection is enabled in the parameters of the Multi lingual abstraction layer bot and the language is chosen by the fetching the locale of the visitor's browser.

It will result the same URLs when you visit the site, only the language will be changed. So the other language has a secondary role and not so well included in the site map as the primary language. That will result improper indexing of the site.

Have you got any idea howwould it be possible to show the search engines the secondary languge correctly via a site map?

Hi, I have three ideas for that:

1- You can have two or more sitemaps, one for each language on your site. In the preferences of the sitemap you could force it to use one specific language. This is not yet implemented.

2- Xmap could print one url for each language on the same sitemap (at least for the XML sitemap).

3- I think this should work right now but I’m not sure. If you manipulate the url to add the param “lang=es” or something like that, does it do the trick?
I don't have a site with multiple languages right now, but I will try to setup one shortly. If you can test it and tell us the result it would be great!
