How to fetch RAW output for use in own module?

Hello,
can you please guide me on how to fetch the sitemap raw output from com_xmap using php? I would like to process this within an own module. I tried to fsockopen('index.php?option=com_xmap&sitemap=1&format=raw') but could received any data.
How would i have to do this correctly?
