Hide joomgallery albums in xmap

xmap 1.2.14 joomla 1.5.23
I have hundreds of joomgallery albums. they are all showing in xmap. Is there any way to hide the sub categories and just show main categories? I have tried making menu items and including the id in the exclude menu items in the xmap preferences. doesn't work.

I know how -- log in as superadmin go to the site map in the front end. click on the green check next to the item in the sitemap.
only xmap isn't saving any changes. thanks for the help!
