ask.com and xmap

Postby webharvest » Wed Feb 27, 2008 12:32 am

Has anyone tried to pin ask.com with the xmap sitemap url for their site?

I tried and ask.com comes back with an unsuccessful page. I wonder if it is expecting a link with .xml at the end

Yes, it looks like ask.com expects urls ending with '.xml'

Maybe you can try adding it directly on your .htaccess file

After the line:
RewriteEngine On

add the following two lines:

Code: Select all
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/sitemap.xml
RewriteRule .* /index.php?option=com_xmap&view=xml&no_html=1

And after that, try accessing your site to the url
http//your-site-domain/sitemap.xml

It worked like a champ. Thanks. Ask.com accepted the sitemap also.

Hi, I added this code exactly as you say but when I access this url on Firefox it drops a 404 error page.

any ideas ? I use JoomSEF is this related ? the new version also supports some sitemap features have you checked ?

and I got a question too..
is there any case of a new version of xmap that will release the /sitemap.xml as a valid url ? without adding strings in the .htaccess ?

cheers

Where did you added it? You have to add those lines in the right place in the .htaccess file. Try adding it right after the Line:

RewriteEngine On

yes there exactly... see how that area looks:

## Can be commented out if causes errors, see notes above.
Options +FollowSymLinks

#
# mod_rewrite in use

RewriteEngine On

# Sitemap
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/sitemap.xml
RewriteRule .* /index.php?option=com_xmap&view=xml&no_html=1

# Uncomment following line if your webserver's URL
# is not directly related to physical file paths.
# Update Your Joomla! Directory (just / for root)

# RewriteBase /

.. by the way, in the new version of JoomSEF I added this url:

index.php?option=com_xmap&view=xml&no_html=1

.. and gave it a new SEF url as:

sitemap.xml

and works. in the previous version I could not do it.

so now it's fine but the 2 lines in the .htaccess are now useless I think. In any case, why wasn't it working ? I am curious. cause the other guy said it worked from him...

cheers
