zOOm Media Gallery for Joomla 1.5

Zoom Wishlist & Suggestions

Postby Sept_de_Neuf » Tue Jul 15, 2008 8:01 pm

I thought it an idea to start a wishlist of those things that would make zOOm an even better gallery. These are petty improvements and some purely aesthetics, but nevertheless these would make zOOm stand out from the other galleries.

1. It would be nice to get the ZoomThumb feature working. Don't know if there is a missing plug-in or something to get this working. This is definately a feature that I would use on my site.

2. Use the Joomla's Breadcrumb feature to work with zOOm. Maybe some will not agree and don't use the Joomla breadcrumb module, so maybe it would be nice to have a way in selecting to have the zOOm navigation header or not. However, it would be great if the Joomla's Breadcrumb would show the proper links like the zOOm one.

3. Have the footer showing on all pages. Meaning show the "User Management" or "Admin Management", the "Top Ten", "Last Submitted", etc. links to show on the bottom of all Gallery pages. If done this way, then remove the "User Management" or "Admin Management" from the zOOm breadcrumb.

4. Have zOOm work with mysqli turned on. When changing the database to mysqli in the backend configuration, zOOm is the only program that causes an error. It is my understanding that having mysqli instead of mysql is a better choice and I would like to turn this feature on.

5. Change or add a template for the image slideshow page. I don't particularily like the blue bars at the bottom, and I believe that the navigation icons could be improved. I may work on this myself and if I do, I will share and send the files for possible inclusion. Or if others have ideas, please share.

6. It would also be very nice if when clicking on an image within the slideshow, that the image would render with a popup with the bigger, original size or even better use the lightbox effect.

7. Maybe have the possibility of adding Highslide as an option. The reason I say this is because Highslide has a really nice effect that I find newbies prefer since all navigation buttons show upfront at the top right. One doesn't have to figure out to run his cursor over the right or left enabling to view the next or previous picture. The effect I would prefer is the example link below, the second picture at the top: http://www.joomlanook.com/

8. Security code for the e-cards module when sending eCards. An added bonus would be to have the choice of different fonts, colours, background for the text. Maybe the best solution would be to allow an editor of choice for the textbox.

9. Change the hovering tooltip/caption box to a better looking one.

10. Have an area in the downloads for 3rd party zOOm plugins etc such as the Community Builder plugin.

Again, these are only suggestions, and if one don't ask.... You never know the possibilities :side:. Please know that this list doesn't reflect the gratitude I have for you taking on this project and making it what it is today. No small task I'm sure and well worthy of my donation. I am very grateful for all that you have done. :cheer:

I have found an old zOOmThumbCoder plugin. I've tried it but it doesn't work. I've attached it here and maybe it can be made compatible to get the zOOmThumb Coder working.

With substantial improvments have been done and the zoom development team seemingly ceased to support this excellent module, why not rebrand this modified version of Zoom and register as a new project with Joomla site?

Great! Thanks for your comments and suggestions. Also, I would like to add some others points that I have in mind:

11. Improvement of the commenting system. Add captcha and other anti-spam security rules. Also, a comments management interface.

12. Improve the rating system. Enable to select whenever users can rate a picture and avoid the possibility to rate again the same picture.

13. Add the option to use 3rd party commenting systems like Joomlacomment or others.

14. Make it XHTML compatible. (This is a huge one)

I'm going to start working on this list right now. Any other suggestion will be really welcome.

I would like to replace the icons with some new and fresh ones. I'm now designer, so any contribution is also welcome.

although all of the above suggestions are great and would really add to Zoom media gallery I would like to see a couple of things before anything else:

1. - Manual ordering of galleries. The ability to order things any way you want instead of just by name, filename, or date. For example I have my main galleries that I want in alphabetical order but all of my sub galleries and photos I want in date order with the newest photos first. Right now it's one or the other...would be great to be able to order them in different ways depending on what you need.

2. - Hit counter working with Lightbox popups. I don't know if this is even possible but I love the lightbox effect but I hate that my counter stays at 0 for all images.

Otherwise, thanks for this great port to Joomla 1.5. I've been waiting for ZMG to be available for 1.5 because it's still the best image gallery out there.
