where is the xml sitemep file that is submitted to Google

Postby bobisok » Sat Sep 29, 2007 1:03 am

I installed xamp in my joomla 1.5 site with compatability mode turned on. Xmap works great creating a sitemap that I can plug into my menu and display on my site, very accurate, nice formatting.

My problem is that I don't know what to submit to google. I tried the components/com_xmap/gss.xsl, and the google webmaster site did not accept the sitemap saying essentially that it had to be in the root directory. I don't see anything on the backend interface that allows me to specify the location or name of the xml file that I assume the search engines want to use in crawling a dynamic site.

I haven't done this before and am sure I am missing something obvious. Any advice is much appreciated.

Hello, you can see the url in the preferences of the sitemap. Copy that link and submit it to google.

I must still be submitting the wrong thing. This is my second failed attempt submitting my sitemap to google. They say
Sitemap errors for http://urpartofit.net/index.php?option=com_xmap

This Sitemap has the following errors.
Errors
Unsupported file format
Your Sitemap does not appear to be in a supported format. Please ensure it meets our Sitemap guidelines and resubmit.

The index.php?option=com_xmap is what I submitted which I found in the menu item I created for xmap. I previously tried to submit the url of the sitemap by copying the url after selecting the sitemap menu and calling the sitemap display from the front end of my joomla site.

I must be misunderstanding what to do.

I have exact the same problem. If you look at my website http://genealogie.mypub.nl and you see the Sitemap option and rightclick to see the prefs, the url is:
http://genealogie.mypub.nl/index.php/component/option,com_xmap/Itemid,37/
Google doesn't accept this url. The url you are mentioning, where can I find this format?

Thanks in advance

Well I finally found the 'hidden' preferences and found the XML link. Now it works! Thanks. Maybe you should make the Preferences a little bit easier to find ;-)

Here's the step by step process of submitting your site to google:
1. Install Xmap and create a menuitem called sitemap for the installed component, if you want your user to view your sitemap.
2. search for site map submission on google and after login it will give you option of submitting link, I used my own website:
http://www.buydirectindia.com/index.php?option=com_xmap&sitemap=1&view=xml&no_html=1
you can use yours.
Now the tricky part is getting this URL:
click on the "Down Arrow" on extreme right of your sitemap display in component view and first item in that list is preference.
Just remember that if you are using SEF and url is SEF like yoursite/xamp/sitemap it won't work, you need to disable SEF for Xamp.

Thanks,
Vijay

I'm having the same problem

In Google, it says supply a URL ending in .xml

To submit to MSN via Moreover
http://api.moreover.com/ping?u=http://yourdomain.com/yoursitemap.xml

To submit to Ask
http://submissions.ask.com/ping?sitemap=http%3A//www.yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml

For Yahoo, a txt file or "Specify the Sitemap location in your site's robots.txt file by adding the following line: Sitemap: <sitemap_location>
The <sitemap_location> should be the complete URL to the Sitemap.
For example:
Sitemap: http://www.example.com/sitemap.xml"

Nowhere does it say submit a URL like the one Xmap gives, and I tried entering a html link (sh404SEF custom URL) for Google, but it wouldn't accept it.

How do you create a URL with a .xml extension so it's accepted by these search engines?

I also installed sh404SEF but can't create a .xml-ending URL by creating a custom URL.

Hi, you can submit to Google, Yahoo, MSN and others the url given by Xmap. Ask.com requires a file ended with .xml.

Here you can find a solution for this:
