html sitemap paging

Our website has a lot of pages, so the number of links in our HTML sitemap is huge, about 700. Google starts dinging/penalizing pages with over 100 links, so it seems like a good idea to be able to control the number of links per page in the sitemap.

Has anyone else pondered this issue?

I've edited the menu items 'options' in my Xmap HTML sitemap to leave out select articles/pages in the site but capturing all articles in the dynamic XML version. Now I'm down to ~60 links on my HTML Xmap sitemap. This works for me but I'd like to hear, if anyone else has concerns regarding paging.

Now Google starts penalizing pages with over 100 links so it is better to avoid 100+ links a a page of your html sitemp.

Do you mean 100 external link or internal links? If you mean external links I disagree.

You may have already thought about this, but what about using multiple sitemaps?

You could also no follow your HTML Sitemap or include it in the Robots TXT file, it is more for users than search engines, especially if your using an XML Sitemap as well.
