Extra links showing up in sitemap (xml)

I have a site in 5 languages. I'm using a single xmap to create all the sitemaps and sending Google different sitemaps using the language code. Google is reporting some 404s from the sitemap, so I checked it out.

The problem that I'm seeing is that additional links are showing up in the site map. Specifically links that don't (and shouldn't exist).

Look at the bottom 9 links, for example. The finch-kb is a protected section on the website. The 79 is id of the category of english/product. This category is not a sub-category of finch-kb. There are no menu items that link to these categories. Yet here they are.

I *think* that these menu items for these *may* have existed at one point. But they are either trashed or deleted at this point. There is nothing in the database or with these names.

Could someone point me in the right direction?

I think I figured out what is going on. I have 'expand categories' set to 'Always' and it is expanding all categories to look for sub articles. however, I have many categories where this isn't desired. Additionally, it's adding these categories to the wrong parents and I'm not sure why.
