Xmap 1.5.14 - Disabled menu items still in xml sitemap

Postby nigelss » Thu Mar 08, 2012 9:42 pm

Just trying XMAP out and have it pretty-much figured BUT I cannot stop selected menu items from appearing in the xml site map. I log in on the front end as superadmin, display the html sitemap, nice green ticks by everything, select the items I don't want and the green ticks change to red/white crosses but this has no effect whatsoever on the xml sitemap generation. The links I don't want are all still there in the regenerated xml file.

If I log out of the front end and display the html site map the items I disabled are not included anymore which is good.

So should disabling a menu item affect the html sitemap *and* the xml sitemap or just the html sitemap? It looks like the latter but I want disabled items not to be included in the xml sitemap either.

Can anyone tell me what it is supposed to do :?:

Thanks,
Nigel

To reply to my own post, changing visibility of menu items via the front end only affects the html sitemap.

If individual menu items are excluded using the administrator facilities (Sitemaps tab => options => preferences => exclude menu ids) the specified items are omitted from the html sitemap and the xml sitemap. If you log onto the front end as superadmin and look at the html sitemap the excluded items are not displayed with the red/white cross - they are not displayed at all.

Also in the admin facilities in the list of menus (with up/down/delete/options for each) in options you can set whether or not the complete menu appears in the html and/or xml sitemaps.

Conclusion:
If you want to exclude individual menu items from the xml sitemap you must use the administrator facilities. This will also exclude the items from the html sitemap and there is nothing you can do about it.

Admin facilities also allow for the inclusion/omission of a complete menu in the html and xml sitemaps, i.e. it can appear in none, either or both maps.

If you are happy to include everything for your selected menus in the xml sitemap but want to change what is in the html sitemap log into the front end as superadmin and tick/untick entries as required.

I have no idea if this is the correct behaviour but it is what it does for me :!:

I suspect I have more to find out about this software. It's really good in what it does but it's a shame that there isn't any comprehensive user documentation for it (and yes, I have read all the documentation for xmap1 on this site). Users shouldn't have to spend hours figuring out how to make things work. I only came up with the solution for excluding items from the xml sitemap after looking at the code :geek:

These comments apply to Xmap 1.5.14 as I am still on Joomla 1.5.25. I have no idea if the situation is different for the releases for Joomla 1.6+

Whatever, many thanks to the developer for making this extension available.

Best wishes,
Nigel
