Free extensions for Joomla!

I am banging me head against the wall trying to figure this out. Can somebody give me the steps to create a blog layout (thumbnail and text paragraph). I figured out everything ok but for the life of me cant figure how to link what I created. After I set it up in module manager what steps do I take to link to in the Menu Manager.
