Possible Google Sitemap Submissions Workarounds

Postby jeffrey2012 » Fri Feb 08, 2008 1:04 am

Greetings, all.

I love XMap. Wow. Lots of thought and creativity went into it!

I considered adding my response to existing threads about
Google errors, but there were many, so I thought I would
start a new one (if that's OK).

I, too, got a Google error when I tried to submit the sitemap.
On my site the url worked perfectly. But when I pasted the
url into the Google text input box -- no go.

So I tried a workaround that worked on my site.

I modified the .htaccess so that when I requested a file
names "sitemap.xml" at my root, I was served the expected
sitemap from XMap. Not a perfect solution, but I needed
something to work for Google, so this was good enough for me.

Here's the two lines I added to the .htaccess file:

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/sitemap.xml
RewriteRule ^(.*) /index.php?option=com_xmap&sitemap=1&view=xml&no_html=1

(If you use the above, be careful of the line-wrap on the
rewrite rule; must be all on one line. There also is
supposed to be a space between ^(.*) and /index...)

This rewrite also worked perfectly on my site.

But Google still didn't like it!

Looking at the Google Webmaster interface showed that
I was submitting for my site www.rightbrainkids.com --
which meant Google knew it was for that site.

So I left off the site name and just typed the file name
sitemap.xml <-- Note no domain name -- JUST THE FILENAME.

It worked.

Now I am left to wonder if the original url is fine if I
submitted just the search args and left the domain name off.
But at this point I am going to leave well-enough alone
and not touch it until Google shows it hit the site,
and let somebody else experiment!

Hope this helps somebody.

Google Sitemap fix - CONFIRMED!

Postby lmstuff » Mon Feb 11, 2008 8:18 pm

I installed XMap yesterday and submitted my XMap sitemap link to Google only to have be rejected as invalid. So I rolled up my sleeves and started digging.

After reading Jeffrey2012's post (Thank's Jeffrey!)"Possible Google Sitemap Submissions Workarounds" and some further testing this is what I did in a nutshell.

[*]1. Added to the following 2 lines of code to my site's .htaccess file:

[*]RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/sitemap.xml
[*]RewriteRule ^(.*) /index.php?option=com_xmap&sitemap=1&view=xml&no_html=1

[*]2. Now I could use: http://www.YOURWEBSITE.com/sitemap.xml for my sitemap link.
My sitemap created just fine as it did with the original link provided by XMap but now with the redirect!

[*]3. I went to: http://www.validome.org/google/validate an awesome Google sitemap.xml code validater.

[*]Was I surprised to find at least 10 past articles heading out of thousands of good ones that were SEO'ed with bad weird characters like dashes that were too long or quotes that looked different and so forth. It definitely didn't like "$" signs, I will use the word from now on in my articles! I fixed then one after another and then low and behold my site was beautiful green VALID! HURRAY!!! (You can cut and paste to Weird characters into your SEO/SEF programs exclude list to prevent the naming in the future. I use sh404SEF)

[*]4. Then I went to: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ and deleted my old sitemap. I then resubmitted my site map with my sitename and only the sitemap.xml as follows: http://www.YOURWEBSITE.com/sitemap.xml

That's it! A happy Googlebot now!

Also I an not sure but the original long link could have possibly worked from XMap without the redirect in the .htaccess to sitemap.xml. I didn't retry once I cleaned up all my sites errors!

[*]Also please go to my Link Exchange and enter your website. It will add to your Google Ranking! http://www.abundancetips.com/index.php/Web-Links/Link-Exchange/Link-Exchange.html
